Coral Beach Walk

One of the most iconic and rewarding short walks near Dunvegan, the Coral Beach walk leads through open croftland to a stunning stretch of white shoreline and crystal-clear turquoise water that can look almost tropical on a sunny day. Despite its name, the beach is not actually made from coral, but from sun-bleached fragments of coralline seaweed (known as maerl), which create its famous white appearance. The walk itself is easy and family-friendly, following a clear coastal track with beautiful views across Loch Dunvegan towards the islands and surrounding hills.

The route begins from Claigan, around 10 minutes north of Dunvegan by car, and takes approximately 25–30 minutes each way. Along the walk you may spot seals offshore, grazing Highland cattle, sheep and an abundance of seabirds, while the small hill behind the beach offers spectacular panoramic views for those wanting a slightly longer adventure.

Visitors should be aware that Coral Beach is extremely popular during the summer months. Parking has historically been limited, however a larger upgraded car park has recently been developed at Claigan to help accommodate increasing visitor numbers. It can still become busy during peak periods, so arriving earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon is recommended.
