Wildlife in and around Dunvegan
Dunvegan sits within one of the most wildlife-rich areas of the Isle of Skye, where dramatic coastlines, sea lochs, moorland and open crofting landscapes provide habitats for an extraordinary range of animals and birdlife. From seals basking on the rocks and otters hunting along the shoreline to soaring sea eagles, dolphins and red deer, nature is never far away here, and some of Skye’s most memorable wildlife encounters can happen completely by chance.
Wildlife Watching Tips:
Early morning and evening are often best.
Bring binoculars.
Keep a respectful distance.
Never disturb nesting birds or marine mammals.
Sometimes the best sightings happen when you least expect them.
Seals Around Loch Dunvegan - Loch Dunvegan is one of the best places on Skye to spot common and grey seals, often seen resting on rocks or swimming close to shore. Boat trips from Dunvegan regularly visit local seal colonies
Otters - Skye is one of the best places in Britain to see wild otters. Patient visitors watching quiet stretches of rocky coastline around sea lochs may be lucky enough to spot one feeding amongst the seaweed beds.
Sea Eagles & Golden Eagles - The skies above Dunvegan are home to both golden eagles and the magnificent white-tailed sea eagle, Britain's largest bird of prey with a wingspan approaching eight feet. These remarkable birds are regularly seen across the island and coastline.
Dolphins, Whales & Marine Life - The waters surrounding Skye support dolphins, porpoises, minke whales and even occasional orca sightings. Summer is often the best time for marine wildlife watching, particularly around the west coast.
